The Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo continues with Roppongi, Omontesando and Shimokitazawa each one showing many new fashion trends and very different styles. The most interesting show during the second day is the one by Shida Tatsuya who launched his first collection in 2006 immediately becoming a big hit in Japan while still finding the time to present it abroad, in New York this year and more the once in Paris. His SS 2011 collection is very much Paris-inspired: it is for a behemienne woman who likes mix-matching garments, including ones which typically belong to a man’s wardrobe, such as the Panama hat and the double-breasted trench but enjoys colours and patterns, like mini and maxi polka dots.
Completely different the collection showcased by label Gut’s Dynamite Cabarets which seems influenced by rock and punk music. Despite the English sounding name, the brand is 100% Japanese; the designers are Cabaret Aki and Jackal Kuzu. The mood is inspired by the London contemporary look: men wear shorts paired with ankle laced boots and an unbuttoned shirt to be worn on top of a T-shirt with knee-length leggings also featuring as a big hit. Women can choose between studded, leather biker jackets and black pleated skirts.
Many-sided are also the sources of inspiration merging into Discovered collection, a brand launched in 2001 by Tatsuya Kimura and Sanae Yoshida mainly focused on menswear. In contrast with previous collections in which the two designers opted for single-colour blocks and clean lines, the current s/s 2011 collection is a blaze of colours and prints: animalier, multi-striped print and even a red-cross on a white tee. Shapes vary from skinny, below-the-knee jeans – to be worn with braces – to over-sized, high-waisted trousers which resemble very much dungarees.
The third day was very eclectic featuring an array of incredibly diverse outfits: from Corazon del Alma’s light and bon-ton evening gowns to Izreel’s menswear collection. Kazuhiro Takakura mixes rockabilly signature pieces such as skinny, ankle grazer trousers with extravagant pinstriped suits on a python print or animalier total looks. Stripes and dual-colour rule the show featuring on almost every garment, from shirts and cardigans to shoes.
